Line Electrician (Journeyman)
Marquette Board of Light and Power seeks an experienced Line Electrician (Journeyman) to join their team in Marquette, MI. As a Line Electrician, you will be responsible for constructing, maintaining, and repairing overhead and underground electrical distribution systems. This role ensures the safe and reliable delivery of electricity to customers, often requiring work in varying weather conditions and emergency situations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Install, repair and maintain overhead and underground power lines, poles, and related equipment.
- String wires, set poles, and install crossarms, insulators, and transformers.
- Perform hot line work using appropriate live-line tools and techniques.
- Inspect and test power lines and equipment to ensure they are functioning properly.
- Diagnose and repair faults in electrical systems, including outages caused by weather, accidents, or equipment failure.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines, including the use of protective gear and tools.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, NESC, and company safety standards.
- Respond promptly to outages, storms, and other emergencies, including extended shifts and on-call availability.
- Collaborate with team members to restore power efficiently and safely.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, and customers about project progress and issues.
- Read and interpret blueprints, maps, and work orders.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Completion of a four-year accredited or certified line electrician apprentice program and/or attained Journeyman line electrician status required.
- Consideration may be made for current hot-apprentices in their fourth step.
- Valid Journeyman Line Electrician certification/license required (Consideration may be made for current hot-apprentices in their fourth step.)
- Heavy equipment operational knowledge. Certifications are a plus.
- Knowledge of all phases of electric distribution and transmission work procedures and safety rules, electric distribution standards, applicable state electric codes and statutes, and underground facilities and their purpose.
- Able to make competent decisions and remain calm in high-stress situations.
- Must be willing and able to take part in standby and on-call rotations, including first call and second call policies.
- Verbal and written communication skills.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Must be willing to take and pass Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing.

Engineering-GIS Intern
Company Description:
The Marquette Board of Light and Power (MBLP) has been a cornerstone of reliable, affordable power for over 128 years, proudly serving approximately 18,000 customers in Marquette and nine surrounding townships. With the largest geographic coverage of any municipal electric utility in Michigan, the MBLP’s “footprint” is approximately 250 square miles.
Job Description:
MBLP is seeking an Engineering & GIS Intern to support our internal Engineering and Distribution Management team. This internship will provide hands-on experience in engineering and GIS-related projects, focusing on the improvement and maintenance of our distribution network. The Intern will play a key role in updating our GIS system, assisting with distribution system updates, and supporting product specifications and field policy enhancements.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Collaborate with the GIS Technician to geo-locate field equipment and document equipment specifications.
- Assist MBLP locators in geo-locating underground equipment.
- Review, import, and update GIS data, AutoCAD Map 3D drawings, and Microsoft SQL Server databases.
- Support database management tasks related to Microsoft SQL Server.
- Assist in creating and maintaining engineering department mapping and database systems for accurate system maps.
- Work alongside engineering and operations teams to identify and implement process efficiency improvements, cost-saving initiatives, and technology upgrades.
- Provide general support to the MBLP Distribution Department with various tasks as needed.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Technology or a related field.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Valid driver’s license.
Desired Skills and Experience:
- General understanding of electrical engineering principles and practices.
- Familiarity with databases, coding, drafting, GPS equipment, and general mapping.
- Experience with GIS software, AutoCAD Map 3D, and Microsoft SQL Server is a plus.
Financial Consideration:
$22.18/hrly
