Generation Specialist (Shift work position)

Job Summary:          

Responsible for operation and minor maintenance of the MEC and other generating facilities during work shift according to and in compliance with all MBLP company policies and procedures. Ensures generation assets are operated to meet set standards of efficiency, productivity, and safety.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • The Generation Specialist supports the safe operation and maintenance of reciprocating engines and associated balance of all generating facilities/equipment.
  • The Generation Specialist safely operates the generating facilities and precludes the creation or cause of any hazard to the safe operation of the facility such as action or activities that could have an adverse effect on the health and safety of the public, utility personnel, or other individuals including the failure to take action.
  • The Generation Specialist monitors and is aware of the condition of the generating facilities at all times using the engine control and emission control systems as well as performing physical checks of the plants equipment and systems as required. Performs operational duties at the hydros and Combustion Turbine. Performs rounds as required.
  • The Generation Specialist works with maintenance, electrical, and instrumentation personnel pertaining to generating operations as required. Responsible for creating equipment work requests during his or her assigned shift. Reviews routine operating data and informs the Shift Supervisor regularly as to the general status of plant equipment.
  • Promptly informs the Shift Supervisor of any unexplained changes in one or more plant process variables or instrument readings and reports any equipment malfunctions that may affect the safety, reliability, or load capability of the unit to the Shift Supervisor.
  • Completes operations logs and keeps all logs and records current and accurate.
  • Monitors and maintains appropriate equipment water, oil and liquid levels during shift.
  • Performs various operational basic maintenance-related duties including preventative replacement of filters, gasket, lubricating oil, etc. As directed, performs some corrective maintenance tasks and provides assistance to the Maintenance Technicians with corrective and preventive maintenance tasks and assignments.
  • Reads and interprets mechanical flow diagrams, piping and instrument diagrams, and electrical single-line and wiring diagrams.
  • May periodically perform work in the stock room such as receiving and disbursement of parts and supplies.
  • Reviews and updates plant procedures to assure information is current and accurate. Performs data input.
  • Will be expected to maintain operations proficiency, and successfully complete all required BLP Operations Qualifications training.
  • Monitors energy supply and gas usage based on set dispatching schedules.
  • Performs regular cleaning duties at MBLP properties as required.
  • Performs snowplowing/snow removal at MBLP properties as needed and assigned.
  • Will be required to perform other duties as determined by Management
  • Will be required to work alternate work schedules and overtime as needed or as assigned
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Associate level certificate in Industrial Technology or other technical field preferred. A combination of a training certificate and power plant or industrial work experience will be considered.
  • Must have a minimum two years Power Plant experience and have completed the BLP Operations Qualifications Training.  If necessary, must successfully complete any required qualification training within 6 months.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency and knowledge of all facets of power plant operations.
  • Must have demonstrated sound judgment, and the ability to make competent decisions
  • Must be able to assume responsibility, perform duties and handle tasks under potentially quick changing, fast paced, and stressful conditions.
  • Must be able to work alternative work schedule based on current and future operations of the MBLP’s generation facilities.
  • Must possess effective communication skills, both verbal and written and the ability to work across all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to operate personal computers using Microsoft Office Suite and other production computer software as required.
  • Must be in good health and physical condition.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan Driver’s license.

  • Ability to understand, read, and carry out written instructions.
  • Ability to understand, read, and verify documents electronically, verbally, or hard copy
  • Major amount of standing, walking, carrying up to ninety (90) pounds, pushing kneeling, crouching, turning/twisting, bending at waist, handling of items, finger use, feeling/touching of items, coordination, foot-hand-eye coordination, communication, hearing, near/far seeing acuity perception.
  • Moderate amount of balancing.
  • Minor amount of sitting, stair climbing, and ladder climbing.
